from humble village to busy suburb
Introduction
Welcome to the Yoker Story

If you don't know already, Yoker is a bustling suburb located on the western edge of Glasgow, and sits on the north bank of the River Clyde, approximatley 6 miles from the city centre, and a little over a mile east of the famous shipbuilding town of Clydebank, birthplace of the great Cunard Liners known as the "Three Queens", Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth 2
Indeed, as we will discover Yoker is much older than Clydebank, which only came into existance in the latter years of the nineteenth century with the growth of heavy industry and the development of the rail network, and took it's name from Clydebank House which was a house located close to the Yoker ferry, for the superintendant of the Clyde Trustees
A small fishing village by the Clyde?
Yoker was once described by the legendary Scottish comedian Billy Connolly as "a quaint little fishing village on the Clyde", co-incidently Billy was a close friend of local businessman Jimmy Kent who for many years ran a fishing tackle & bait shop on Dumbarton Road close to the former Yoker Primary School.
Certainly anyone looking around today would be hard pushed to recognise this description, but we only need to step back 100 years in time to discover a very different Yoker to the busy suburb we see today.
This website is intended to document the development of that village from it's humble beginnings through to the present day and beyond.
